This background remover uses color matching rather than AI subject detection. You choose the background color, then the tool makes pixels close to that color transparent. A tolerance control determines how broadly similar colors are removed.
How to Remove an Image Background
- Upload a JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF image.
- Click the background in the preview to sample its color.
- Adjust the tolerance until the background is removed.
- Use edge softness to reduce harsh edges.
- Use the Erase brush for areas still containing background.
- Use Restore if part of the subject was removed accidentally.
- Choose transparent, white, black or a custom background.
- Select PNG, WebP or JPG output.
- Click Remove Background and download the result.
What the Controls Do
Color Sampling
Click directly on the image to select the color you want to remove. This is useful when the background is not pure white or black.
Tolerance
Controls how different a pixel can be from the sampled color while still being treated as background.
Edge Softness
Creates a smoother transition around pixels close to the removal threshold.
Connected Mode
Limits removal to areas connected to the sampled background instead of removing every matching color in the image.
Erase Brush
Manually removes areas the automatic color matching did not catch.
Restore Brush
Restores image pixels when automatic removal removes part of the subject.
What Images Work Best?
| Image type | Expected result | Recommended approach |
|---|---|---|
| Logo on a solid background | Excellent | Sample the background and use a low to moderate tolerance. |
| Product on a plain backdrop | Good to excellent | Use connected removal and fine-tune the tolerance. |
| Screenshot with a flat background | Excellent | Sample the unwanted color and use a low tolerance. |
| Portrait on a plain wall | Good | Increase tolerance carefully around hair and clothing. |
| Busy outdoor photograph | Limited | Color matching cannot reliably understand the subject. |
| Subject and background have similar colors | Limited | Use connected removal and manual restore where needed. |
What Is Color Tolerance?
Color tolerance determines how closely a pixel must match the selected background color before the tool treats it as background. A low tolerance removes colors close to the sampled color. A higher tolerance removes a wider range of similar shades.
Start with a moderate value. If a halo remains around the subject, increase the tolerance gradually. If parts of the subject disappear, lower the tolerance or use connected removal.
Transparent Background vs Solid Background
A transparent background is useful when you want to place the subject over another design, website, presentation or image. PNG is the preferred output when transparency needs to be preserved.
A solid replacement background is useful when the destination requires a normal rectangular image. JPG does not support transparency, so the tool fills transparent areas with the selected background color before JPG export.
Is This an AI Background Remover?
No. The tool uses browser-based color matching and Canvas pixel processing. It does not use a cloud AI service or a machine-learning model to identify people, products or objects.
This approach has an important advantage: your image does not need to be uploaded to an image-processing server. It also has a limitation: color matching cannot reliably separate a subject from a complex background when both contain similar colors.
Is My Image Uploaded?
No. The image is loaded into your browser and processed locally with HTML Canvas. Browser-based background removers use this approach for private, client-side color removal. 1

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the image background remover work?
The tool samples a background color and compares image pixels against that color. Pixels within the selected tolerance are made transparent.
Is this an AI background remover?
No. This is a color-based background remover. It works best with solid or simple backgrounds.
Can I click the image to choose the background color?
Yes. Click the background directly in the image preview. The tool samples the pixel under your pointer and uses that color as the removal target.
What does the tolerance setting do?
Tolerance controls how far a pixel color can differ from the selected background color while still being removed. Higher tolerance removes more similar shades.
What is connected background removal?
Connected removal limits automatic background removal to pixels connected to the sampled area. This helps preserve matching colors inside the subject.
Can I manually erase part of the background?
Yes. Select the Erase tool and paint over areas you want to remove. You can adjust the brush size and opacity.
Can I restore an area I accidentally removed?
Yes. Select Restore and paint over the area you want to bring back from the original image.
Can I replace the removed background with white?
Yes. Choose White under Background replacement. You can also select black or a custom color.
Which format should I use for a transparent background?
PNG is the safest choice when you need transparency. JPG does not support transparent pixels.
Does the tool upload my photos?
No. Processing happens locally in your browser using Canvas. The tool does not require an image-processing server.
Why does some of the background remain?
The remaining pixels might have colors outside the selected tolerance. Increase the tolerance gradually or use the Erase brush for small areas.
Why did part of my subject disappear?
The subject might contain colors similar to the selected background. Lower the tolerance, enable connected removal or use the Restore brush.
