What Is a Word Counter?
A word counter is an online tool used to measure the number of words in a piece of text. It also provides useful information such as character count, sentence count and paragraph count.
Writers, students, bloggers, editors, marketers and content creators often need to stay within a specific word or character limit. This tool gives you those figures while you type or paste text.

How Word Counting Works
The tool treats groups of text separated by whitespace as words. Extra spaces and empty lines do not increase the word count.
Character count includes spaces, punctuation and other characters entered into the text box. The character count without spaces removes whitespace before calculating the total.
Sentence counting looks for common sentence-ending punctuation such as periods, question marks and exclamation marks. Abbreviations, decimal numbers and unusual writing styles can affect automated sentence detection.
Reading Time Calculation
The estimated reading time uses an average reading speed of about 200 words per minute.
Reading time = word count ÷ 200
For example, a 1,000-word article takes roughly 5 minutes to read at this rate.
Speaking Time Calculation
The estimated speaking time uses approximately 130 words per minute.
Speaking time = word count ÷ 130
A 650-word script would take roughly 5 minutes to deliver at this speaking rate.
Why Word Count Matters
Word limits appear in school assignments, essays, articles, applications, scripts, reports and social media content. Knowing your word count helps you stay within the required limit without manually counting every word.
Character counts also matter when a platform or form limits the amount of text you can submit.
