What Happens When You Convert GIF to JPG?

A GIF can contain one image or multiple frames. When an animated GIF is converted to JPG with this tool, only the first frame becomes the output image. The remaining animation frames are not included in the JPG.

JPG also does not support transparency. If the GIF contains transparent pixels, the converter places those pixels over the background color you select before creating the JPG.

The conversion does not restore detail or colors lost when the original GIF was created. GIF uses a limited color palette, so converting to JPG does not recover information missing from the source image. 1

GIF to JPG vs GIF to PNG

JPG works well when you need a widely supported still image and want control over compression. PNG is a better choice when you need transparency or want to avoid another lossy compression step.

Common Uses for GIF to JPG

A GIF to JPG converter is useful when a website, form, application, marketplace, document system, or image editor requires a JPG file instead of a GIF.

Converting the first frame also works for creating static thumbnails, previews, document images, presentation graphics, blog images, and other situations where animation is not required.

Privacy

This converter processes GIF files inside your browser using browser image and canvas functions. The files are not sent to a remote conversion server. Your original GIF stays on your device.

Because the image is decoded and then written as a new JPG, source metadata is not carried into the new file.
