How the BMI Calculator Works

Body mass index compares body weight with height. For adults, BMI is a screening measure used alongside other health information. It does not directly measure body fat or distinguish between muscle, bone and fat.

Imperial BMI Formula

BMI = weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared, multiplied by 703

Metric BMI Formula

BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared

The calculator converts your selected measurements before applying the appropriate BMI formula.

Adult BMI Categories

For adults age 20 and older, standard BMI categories use the same thresholds regardless of sex. The men and women options on this page make it easier to enter and view results for your intended use, but they do not apply different adult BMI thresholds.

BMI Category
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 to less than 25 Healthy Weight
25 to less than 30 Overweight
30 or greater Obesity
30 to less than 35 Class 1 Obesity
35 to less than 40 Class 2 Obesity
40 or greater Class 3 Obesity

Why Is Age Optional?

Age is useful information to record with a BMI result, but it is not required for the standard adult BMI formula. For adults 20 and older, the standard BMI categories are interpreted using the same thresholds regardless of age or sex.

Children and teenagers are different. BMI for people ages 2 through 19 is interpreted using BMI-for-age percentiles, which require age and sex. This page is designed for adult BMI calculations.

BMI Calculator for Men and Women

The men and women options provide separate calculator experiences without changing the standard adult BMI formula or category thresholds. Select the option matching the audience or calculation you want to perform.

BMI should not be treated as a diagnosis. Muscle mass, body composition, medical history and other health factors are not captured by BMI alone.
