What changed since 2024
- Subscene is gone. Its owner announced the closure on May 2, 2024, and the site is offline. TorrentFreak reported that it had not been financially viable for years. Archive Team saved part of its content. Any site using the name today is not the original.
- OpenSubtitles moved to .com. The older opensubtitles.org has been phased out and its old connection for apps closed to free users. The current service is OpenSubtitles.com, where free accounts have a daily download limit.
- English-Subtitles.org is reported offline. Several 2026 reviews list it as gone, so skip any list that still recommends it.

Movie and TV subtitles sites
OpenSubtitles.com: best for an exact match
OpenSubtitles.com has the biggest library here, and it is the only site on this list that can match a subtitle to your exact video file. Drag the video into the search box, and the site reads the file’s digital fingerprint (called a hash) and shows subtitles made for that version. You can also search by title, release name or IMDb number, and filter by language, hearing-impaired files, trusted uploaders and machine translations.
![]() |
| Search for subtitles in OpenSubtitles.com |
If you have “Dune.Part.Two.2024.2160p.WEB-DL.mkv” and want Portuguese subtitles, drag the file in and you see only subtitles made for that release, with no trial and error. If you teach a film class and want accurate Spanish text, filter out machine translations and keep trusted uploads. Each result shows its download count, rating and upload date, and a file with thousands of downloads is usually safer than one nobody has tried.
The limit is the daily quota. Free accounts have a cap, and a user report from late October 2026 puts it at 20 downloads a day. OpenSubtitles’ own help page says 5 a day without an account when an app downloads for you. One Emby user who paid for Emby Premiere still hit the limit, because the quota belongs to OpenSubtitles, not to the media server. A VIP plan removes ads, including promo lines inside subtitle files, and raises the cap. Kodi and VLC add-ons that still use the old .org connection no longer work, so update them or switch to the .com version. Check your account page for the current limit.
SubDL: best Subscene replacement
SubDL is where most former Subscene users went. It launched on May 2, 2024, the day Subscene shut down, and it started from Subscene’s English and Persian collections. It also keeps a searchable copy of the old archive next to new uploads. The site says it has more than 2.9 million subtitles in 118 languages, and those figures have not been independently checked. Ordinary downloads need no account, and each file arrives as a ZIP with the subtitle inside.

You can search by title, file name, IMDb or TMDB number, season, episode, year and language. If you are looking for the Persian subtitle of “A Separation” that you once got from Subscene, check SubDL first. If your Kodi setup used Subscene and went blank in 2024, switch its subtitle source to SubDL and the routine stays the same. Bazarr, a free tool that downloads subtitles for a home media library, also supports it.
The site shows ads, and one release can have several files, so match the release tag in the file name before you download. Paid plans exist. A review that checked the site in August 2026 listed Plus at about $3 and Pro at about $5 a month, with developer access in Pro. SubDL’s terms say features can change, so try the free version first, and type the address yourself because copycat sites use the same name.
Podnapisi: best for frame rate and hearing-impaired files
Podnapisi is the site to use when subtitles drift out of sync as a film plays. Videos run at a set number of frames per second (fps), usually 23.976 or 25, and a subtitle made for one speed slides away from the picture on the other. Podnapisi shows the fps before you download and lets you filter by it, along with keyword, year, language, season and episode. Its homepage has cited more than two million files in 101 languages, a count that changes. Downloads need no registration.

If you recorded a film from a TV channel in Poland or the Czech Republic and it runs at 25 fps, filter for 25 fps and the last half hour will still line up. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, choose a hearing-impaired file, which adds speaker names and sound cues such as [door closes] and [music playing].
Expect an older design and a few gaps for very new titles. Several entries can carry nearly the same name with different timing, so pick by release and fps, not by position in the list. Files come as a ZIP with the subtitle inside.
SubSource: best for brand-new releases
SubSource is a newer community site with active listings, including 2026 releases, which makes it a good first check in the days after a film or episode appears. Downloads need no account. You only sign up to upload subtitles or to get a key that connects the site to other apps.
![]() |
| subsource.net |
Its rules help you judge quality. Machine-translated subtitles are allowed only in the first week after release, and only when no human-made subtitle exists, and they must be labeled. If you find a film on release weekend, you can tell at a glance whether a file is a labeled machine translation or a human one, and decide whether to wait a few days. If an Emby plugin for SubSource suddenly finds nothing, check the key first. The plugin only connects to the site, and it needs a key from your SubSource profile.
Former Subscene uploaders can ask to claim their old profile by creating an account and sending a support request. The transfer is not automatic. Because anyone can upload, read the file name, rating and release tag before you download.
Addic7ed: best for TV episodes
Addic7ed is built for television. You choose a show, then a season, then an episode, and each episode lists several versions tied to a specific release, with labels such as corrected and hearing-impaired. Translators are credited by name, and files download as plain subtitle files with no unzipping.
![]() |
| Addic7ed subtitles site |
The version list is the reason to use it. For an episode named “Show.Name.S03E07.1080p.WEB.H264-GROUP”, open the episode page and pick the version with the matching release label, and the timing usually fits. If you follow a new series in French, pick a French version from the same page. When several versions exist, the comments and the corrected label show which one people trust.
It is weak for movies, and the design is plain. Downloads have a daily allowance that rises with a free account. One review lists 35 files per 24 hours for registered users, so check the current number.
YIFY Subtitles: best for YTS and YIFY movies
YIFY Subtitles covers movies only, and its files are timed for YTS and YIFY video releases. The catalog spans more than 50 languages. Search by title, and the movie page lists subtitles by language with ratings. New films are covered quickly.
![]() |
| yts-subs.com movie subtitles database |
If your file is “Movie.Name.2024.1080p.WEBRip.x264-[YTS.MX].mp4”, a file from this site usually fits on the first try. If you have the same movie as a Blu-ray rip, it often will not, so use OpenSubtitles.com or SubDL. TV shows are not covered.
Several sites copy the YIFY Subtitles name on mirror domains. Open it through a link you trust, and download only the subtitle file, never a player or installer offered beside it.
TVsubtitles.net: best for complete seasons
TVsubtitles.net organizes everything by show, season and episode. Listings show the language, release, uploader and whether a file is hearing-impaired, and each file displays its download count. It works best when you want a whole series, not one fresh episode.
![]() |
| Search for the latest movie’s subtitles on tvsubtitles.net |
If you are rewatching all ten seasons of “Friends” with Spanish subtitles, you can move season by season and collect every episode in one place. If you want an older comedy such as ʼAllo ʼAllo, it appears in the show list, so you do not have to guess the spelling. For an episode that aired yesterday, check Addic7ed or SubSource too.
The site covers TV only, and some users report that certain regions or internet providers block it. If it does not load, try another source and do not install anything that claims to fix the problem.
Anime subtitle sites
Anime fans often need two things that general sites miss: Japanese subtitles and styled .ass files, which carry colors, positions and effects.
Jimaku: best for Japanese anime subtitles
Jimaku hosts Japanese subtitle files for anime and other Japanese shows. Its creator launched it in March 2024 to replace Kitsunekko, which had filled with spam. Files come in SRT, ASS, VTT and other types, and the site matches titles through TMDB, which lets browser tools find them.
![]() |
| Download Anime subtitles from jimaku.cc |
If you are learning Japanese with “Sousou no Frieren”, turn off the built-in subtitles on your streaming app, download the Japanese file from Jimaku and load it into asbplayer, a free browser tool that places the text over the video and lets you look up words. If you have your own copy of a series, drag the downloaded file into VLC or mpv and it plays right away. Tools that fetch Jimaku subtitles automatically need a key from a free account.
Coverage depends on what the community has uploaded, so a series that just aired may have nothing yet. ASS styling shows only in players that support it.
Kitsunekko: best for older anime
Kitsunekko keeps a large archive of anime subtitles sorted by series and language, with Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean files, many in ASS. It is free and needs no sign-up. A community copy of its files also lives on GitHub, which helps when the site is slow or down.

If you are looking for subtitles for Cowboy Bebop (1998) or Samurai Champloo (2004), open the series folder and download every episode in one go. Spam is the reason Jimaku exists, so take only subtitle files and ignore any link that is not a direct file.
How to pick the right file
The release name in your video’s file name decides which subtitle fits. A subtitle timed for one version of a film can be off by several seconds on another.
| Tag in your file name | Meaning | Subtitle to choose |
|---|---|---|
| WEB-DL or WEBRip | Copied from a streaming service | A subtitle marked WEB-DL or WEB |
| BluRay or BDRip | Copied from a disc | A subtitle made for a disc release |
| HDTV | Recorded from TV | A subtitle marked HDTV, since ad breaks change the timing |
| REMUX | Disc video kept in full quality | Usually the same as BluRay |
| Extended, Director’s Cut, Uncut | A longer or altered version | A subtitle made for that cut, since a standard one will drift |
Check three things before you download: the release tag, the frame rate (23.976 and 25 fps are the common ones) and the version (theatrical, extended or TV edit). Also read the labels on the subtitle itself. SDH or HI means it includes sound descriptions such as [music] and [door slams]. Pick a file without those labels if you want dialogue only. A forced subtitle shows only the lines in a foreign language inside a film that is otherwise in your own.
Subtitle file types
| Type | Works on | Use it for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| .srt | Almost every player and TV | Movies and TV | Simple text, easy to edit, no styling |
| .vtt | Web browsers and online video | Web video | Common on YouTube |
| .ass / .ssa | VLC, mpv and other advanced players | Anime and fansubs | Keeps colors, positions and effects |
| .idx + .sub | DVD players and some computer players | DVD subtitles | Stored as pictures, not text, so you cannot edit them as text |
| .sup | Blu-ray players and some computer players | Blu-ray subtitles | Stored as pictures, not text, so you cannot edit them as text |
When you are not sure, download SRT. It works almost everywhere.
How to add a subtitle to your video
- Unzip the download and keep only the subtitle file.
- Rename the subtitle to match your video exactly, for example Movie Name (2024).srt.
- Put both files in the same folder.
- VLC: drag the file onto the window, or choose Subtitle, then Add Subtitle File.
- mpv: drag the file onto the window.
- Plex, Jellyfin and Kodi: add a language code before the extension, for example Movie Name (2024).en.srt.
If you manage a large library, Bazarr can download subtitles for you from several sites at once, including OpenSubtitles.com, SubDL and Addic7ed. When one site hits its daily limit, it moves on to the next.
Fix subtitles that are late, early or unreadable
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Always early or late by the same amount | The subtitle was made for a different release | In VLC, press G or H to shift the timing in small steps. In mpv, press z or x. Or shift every line at once in Subtitle Edit. |
| Matches at the start, drifts later | Different frame rate | Change the frame rate in Subtitle Edit, or download a file made for your fps. |
| Question marks or boxes instead of letters | The file was saved in the wrong text format | Open it in Notepad or Subtitle Edit and save it as UTF-8, the setting that supports all alphabets. |
| No subtitles appear | The name or file type is not recognized | Match the video’s name, keep both files in one folder, or convert the file to SRT. |
| Odd symbols in curly brackets | An ASS file in a basic player | Open it in mpv or VLC, or convert it to SRT. |
| An advertising line at the start | Promo text from the uploader | Delete the lines in a text editor. |
Subtitle Edit is a free Windows program that handles every fix above. On Mac and Linux, Aegisub and Jubler do the same job.
YouTube subtitles
- Transcript panel: open the video description, choose Show transcript and copy the text. You get plain text, not a subtitle file.
- Online downloaders: Downsub and Checksub accept a video link and return SRT, VTT or text files. They work only when the video has captions, and availability changes often.
- yt-dlp: a free command-line program that saves captions without the video. Run yt-dlp --skip-download --write-subs --write-auto-subs --sub-langs "en" --convert-subs srt VIDEO_URL
Auto-generated captions contain mistakes, especially with names and accents, so read them before you share or publish them. Download captions only from videos you have the right to use.
Staying safe and legal
Subtitle files are plain text. SRT, VTT and ASS files cannot run programs on their own. The danger is what surrounds them. Skip the download if you see any of these:
- A file ending in .exe, .scr, .bat or .lnk, or an installer that says you need it to “view” subtitles.
- A fake download button, forced notifications or repeated redirects.
- A domain that copies a known name, such as a Subscene or YIFY Subtitles copycat.
- A ZIP file that holds anything other than subtitle files.
On the legal side, subtitles are written works, and rights depend on your country and on who made the file. Many sites host files that users upload without checking permission, so a listing does not prove a file is authorized. For the least risk, use the subtitles built into a streaming app, subtitles for videos you own, or subtitles you write yourself.
When no subtitle exists
New releases and small films often have no subtitle in the first days. Request one on a site that has a request form, since files for popular releases usually appear within days. You can also create a draft yourself. Subtitle Edit includes speech recognition based on Whisper, which turns the audio into text. Read the result carefully, because names and slang are often wrong.

FAQ
What is the best site to download subtitles in 2026?
OpenSubtitles.com has the largest library and can match a subtitle to your exact video file. SubDL is the closest replacement for Subscene, and Addic7ed is best for new TV episodes. For anime, use Jimaku.
Is Subscene still working?
No. Subscene shut down permanently in May 2024. Any site using its name now is a copy, not the original service.
What is the best Subscene alternative?
SubDL. It launched on May 2, 2024, started from Subscene’s English and Persian collections and keeps a searchable copy of the old archive. OpenSubtitles.com is the strongest second choice.
Is OpenSubtitles.org still available?
The main service is now OpenSubtitles.com. The older .org site has been phased out, so use the .com site with a free account, and check your daily download limit on your account page.
Do I need an account to download subtitles?
On most sites, no. SubDL, Podnapisi, SubSource, Addic7ed and TVsubtitles.net let you download without one. OpenSubtitles.com asks for a free account.
Why are my subtitles out of sync?
The subtitle was made for a different version or frame rate. Pick a file that matches your video’s release tag and fps, or shift the timing in your player or in Subtitle Edit.
Why do subtitles show question marks or boxes?
The file was saved in a text format that does not match your player. Open it in Notepad or Subtitle Edit and save it as UTF-8.
What does SDH mean in a subtitle file?
SDH stands for subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The file includes speaker names and sound descriptions such as [music] and [door closes]. Choose a file without the label if you want dialogue only.
What is a forced subtitle?
A forced subtitle shows only the lines spoken in a different language from the rest of the film, such as a character speaking Spanish in an English-language movie. It is not a full set of subtitles.
Is it safe to download subtitle files?
SRT, VTT and ASS files are plain text and cannot run programs. The risk comes from fake download buttons, installers and ZIP files that hold other files. Never open an .exe file labeled as a subtitle.
Which subtitle file type should I download?
SRT, because almost every player and TV supports it. Choose ASS for anime when you want the original styling and your player supports it.
Where can I find anime subtitles?
Jimaku hosts Japanese subtitles for anime in SRT, ASS and other types. Kitsunekko keeps a large archive of older series. Both offer subtitle files only, so you need your own copy of the video.
How do I download subtitles from YouTube?
Copy the text from the Show transcript panel, use an online downloader that accepts the video link, or run yt-dlp with the write-subs option. The video must have captions for any method to work.
