Convert GIF images to PNG online for free. Extract the first frame from animated or static GIFs, preserve transparency and download clean PNG images directly in your browser.
GIF to PNG Features
First-frame extraction
Animated GIFs are converted to a single static PNG using the first frame.
Transparency support
Transparent areas from the GIF can remain transparent in the PNG output.
Lossless PNG output
PNG uses lossless compression, so the conversion does not add JPG-style lossy compression.
Batch conversion
Select multiple GIF images and convert them in the same session.
Original dimensions
The converter keeps the original GIF pixel dimensions without resizing or cropping.
Browser-based
GIF decoding and PNG creation happen inside your browser without a conversion server.

What Happens When You Convert GIF to PNG?
A GIF can contain one frame or multiple animation frames. PNG is a single-image format in this converter, so an animated GIF becomes one static image. The browser loads the GIF and draws its first frame onto a canvas before exporting the canvas as PNG.
PNG supports transparency. When the first GIF frame contains transparent pixels, those pixels remain transparent in the PNG output instead of being filled with a solid background. 1
PNG output is lossless, but conversion does not recreate detail missing from the original GIF. GIF also has a limited color palette, so the PNG represents the decoded frame as PNG rather than restoring information from the original source.
GIF vs PNG
| Feature | GIF | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| Animation | Supported | Not preserved by this converter |
| Transparency | Basic transparency | Transparency supported |
| Compression | Lossless format | Lossless |
| Color limitation | Up to 256 colors per frame | Supports much broader color representation |
| Best use | Simple graphics and animation | Static graphics, screenshots, logos and transparent images |
Why Convert GIF to PNG?
GIF remains useful for animation, but a static PNG is often easier to edit, place in documents and use in designs where animation is unnecessary.
PNG is especially useful for logos, icons, screenshots, interface graphics and other images where transparency matters. The PNG output also avoids another lossy compression stage.
Common Uses
You can use the converter to extract a static preview from an animated GIF, create a PNG version of a GIF logo, prepare an image for editing software, create a static thumbnail or turn a GIF asset into a PNG for use on a website.
Privacy and Browser Processing
The converter processes the selected GIF files inside your browser. The files are not sent to a remote conversion server. This keeps the conversion local to your device.
The resulting PNG is created from the decoded image using the browser's canvas functionality. Closing or refreshing the page removes the temporary conversion data from the page.
