When it comes to improving your diet and nutrition, one of the biggest hurdles to overcome is snacking. Everyone gets those cravings throughout the day and often the snacks of choice are salty, sugary, full of fat, or overly processed. It can be hard to resist this temptation and overlooking your snacking habits can stagnate your efforts to live a healthier life. Essentially, eating healthier snacks is going to take some work, but it’s possible.

It’s A Process

Your body has become accustomed to those sweet, salty, fatty, processed snacks. When consumed, it feels good often resembling a “high” that you might receive if you smoke or drink. The longer you’ve been consuming these foods, the harder it is going to be for you to give them up cold turkey.

So, don’t feel bad if you can’t go in your pantry right now and dump everything that’s not organic or rich in nutrients. Don’t be ashamed if you can’t pick the granola bar out of the vending machine instead of the salted chips. This is a process and it will require you to essentially “wean” yourself off of these unhealthy snack choices.

Below, are some suggestions on how to start slowing incorporating more healthy snacks into your diet.

Find Healthy Alternatives

A great place to start is by researching healthy alternatives to the snacks you enjoy most. For example, if you love potato chips, you could switch to sweet potatoes or kale chips with a dash of sea salt. If you have a craving for milkshakes, perhaps you could look for protein shakes.

They come in a variety of flavors including chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Add a bit of almond milk and some more fruit to taste and you’ve got yourself a good cold drink that could satisfy that milkshake craving.

Research Recipes

When you think of healthy snacks it can be easy to get caught up on raw fruit and veggies. While these are good for you and packed with nutrients, it can get a bit bland and boring causing you to revert back to your old snacking habits. The best way to nip this in the bud is to research some recipes online. There are hundreds of healthy snack ideas that you can start preparing for yourself to break up the monotony of a celery stick or yogurt.

Prep Your Snacks In Advance

When you come home from a long day, it's a lot easier to grab some chips or a pack of cookies to curb your appetite until dinner is prepared. To break this bad snacking habit, it is ideal that you prep your snacks in advance just as you would your weekly meals. For instance, you can cut up fresh fruit and veggies and freeze them so it’s easy to make a smoothie or other frozen treat.

Prepackaged Healthy Snacks

Not all healthy snacks need to be made from scratch. There are a lot of good products on the market that enhance your health and wellness. Having prepackaged healthy snacks on hand is another way to break the habit of grabbing something quick but unhealthy.

From brownie bars to cookies and cakes, there are plenty of options to choose from. You can purchase them in batches online so that you always have them in stock when you get a craving.

Indulge - A Little Bit

While eating unhealthy things all the time can damage your mental and physical well-being, trying to strip yourself of these things altogether may be hard to handle. The more you restrict yourself the more you end up desiring the things you shouldn’t have.

So, on occasion, don’t be afraid to indulge in a snack you really love. If you’ve been snacking healthy all week, there should be nothing wrong with having some ice cream or frozen yogurt to reward yourself.

Changing your eating habits to live a healthy life is no small feat. It’s not something you can just say out loud and it be done. You actually have to work at it. Your mind and body have become accustomed to these things that aren’t healthy for you.

You have to wean yourself off of those things by developing a strategy that introduces you to more healthy snacks. With time, patience, and practice, you’ll start to develop more of a palette for healthier snack choices and then eating smart won’t be such a challenge.
